Poor Latch

What it is: When a baby does not make proper contact with the breast, it's known as a poor latch. This can mean that the baby isn't taking enough of the breast into their mouth, or that their tongue isn’t positioned effectively to extract milk.

Details: A proper latch is crucial for effective breastfeeding. It ensures that the baby can efficiently extract milk and helps prevent pain and discomfort for the mother.

Solutions: A Lactation Consultant can help mothers with techniques to improve latch, such as finding comfortable positions for feeding, ensuring the baby’s mouth is wide open before latching, and making sure the baby's lips are flanged outwards.

Insufficient Milk Supply

What it is: A concern where the mother feels she is not producing enough breastmilk to satisfy her baby's hunger.

Details: Various factors such as stress, medical conditions, or latch issues can affect milk production. Sometimes, the perception of low milk supply might be due to misinterpretations of the baby’s behavior.

Solutions: A Lactation Consultant will work with the mother to determine the cause of perceived low milk supply. Solutions can include more frequent feedings, ensuring effective latch, and in some cases, using galactagogues (substances that increase milk supply). It’s also important for mothers to take care of themselves by staying hydrated and eating a balanced diet.

Sore or Cracked Nipples

What it is: Pain, discomfort, and sometimes damage to the nipples due to constant feeding or improper latch.

Details: Sore nipples can be caused by the baby not latching correctly, not using the correct feeding position, or having an infection such as thrush. Cracked nipples can occur when the skin gets too dry, or from the friction of improper latching.

Solutions: Nipple pain can often be alleviated by addressing the latch and feeding position. A Lactation Consultant can also recommend safe creams or ointments to heal sore or cracked nipples. If an infection is present, it’s important to seek medical treatment.

Engorgement

What it is: Breasts becoming overly full with milk, causing them to be hard and painful.

Details: Engorgement typically occurs in the early days of breastfeeding as the milk comes in. It can also happen if feedings are skipped or not frequent enough.

Solutions: To relieve engorgement, it's important to feed the baby often and make sure they are latching well. Mothers can also try expressing a small amount of milk before feeding to soften the breast and make it easier for the baby to latch.

Mastitis

What it is: An inflammation of the breast tissue that sometimes involves an infection.

Details: Mastitis can cause flu-like symptoms and generally makes the mother feel unwell. It is usually caused by a blocked milk duct that hasn't cleared.

Solutions: Mastitis should be treated promptly. Continuing to breastfeed, using warm compresses, and massaging the breast can help. If there is an infection, antibiotics may be needed.
